Birthday Celebration Contest!

What better way to celebrate my upcoming birthday, than with a contest!! I thought it would be fun to see how creative you can be...I will be the big 32 (yep, I'm closer to 40 than 20...why is it my husband gets better looking as he gets older, and I just get more wrinkly?!)

So, here's the contest:

1. take a picture of something shaped in the number 32, or take a picture of 32 items...the more creative the better.
2. send me the picture at nicole@portraitsbynicole.com with the title "32 contest" and include your name

One image per person please and the deadline for entries is Feb 6th. All pictures will be judged by a panel and the winner will be announced on my birthday, Feb 7th.

So, what's the prize????

The winner will receive a free session (to be used this summer) and a print credit of $50!!

Baby Mason| A Birth Story

It's always good to have a birth plan..but sometimes you have to be prepared for the plan to change. JoAnn knows this first hand. She was put on bed rest for the last trimester of her pregnancy due to low amniotic fluid. Because her fluid was so low, the doctors wanted the baby out by 36 weeks. Thinking she was going to meet her baby sometime Saturday, JoAnn went into the hospital Friday evening to start her induction. Because the baby was only 36 weeks, JoAnn's body just wasn't ready...After three days (yes, you heard me, three days on meds to induce!), she was finally taken back for a c-section. Of course, I was bummed because I couldn't be with her to capture the first moments of her baby's life..but I was able to see them within 30 minutes. It was a boy!! Baby Mason...perfectly healthy...did I say perfect?! Congrats Derrick and JoAnn on your sweet baby, I can't wait to take his newborn pics soon!!

Miracle Baby Lane | Toledo Children's Hospital Photography

If you follow my facebook page, you know I have been asking for prayer for a very special little baby, Lane Miller. Lane was born at 32 weeks, and had two holes in his lungs and fluid around his heart. The second night of his life, his parents were called into a little room and told he wasn't going to make it. The immediate family traveled at 3am to say their goodbyes. His parents waited for their new son to breath his last breath....but it never came... God had different plans. God worked a miracle in his little body and he is still with us today and doing better each and every day. I got the privilege to meet him today, and was instantly in love...he is such a sweet sweet baby. I want to thank everyone who has prayed for him and will continue to pray for his full recovery. To hear his mom's story about their journey, check out her last blog entry....you will need a box of tissues.

Meet Lane....now 35 weeks

I was honored to have been able to photograph a beautiful baby girl's birth early Saturday morning (and when I say early..I mean 12:11 am!) My friend and photographer buddy, Erika, had asked me to take birth pictures at the beginning of her pregnancy, and I was pumped! I had just finished a session on Friday when I received a text from Erika saying her water broke. I was so excited, but yet a bit nervous for her, because she was only 35 weeks along. I made some arrangements for my kiddos and headed back into Fort Wayne to document Erika's journey. It was such an amazing experience to witness her daughter's birth...there were so many emotions..........I wanted to cry, but I knew I wouldn't be able to see through my lens if I did! Congrats Erika and Todd (and family) on your precious little one!

Erika felt calm when she had her phone...there were so many texts and messages from friends and family to encourage her!

...but no one could encourage her like her mom.....!

Because she was early, the nicu nurses had to take her and make sure her lungs and oxygen level were normal...

It was hard to watch mom and dad wait to see if their precious baby girl was going to be ok....

after a little oxygen and some love...baby Piper was declared healthy!

then it was holding time!

So so proud of you Erika, you were amazing, brave, and wonderful....God has certainly blessed you!

Hello!! I just wanted to apologize for my lack of posting....I probably have thirty sessions and five or six weddings that I haven't even blogged...!! I've been so busy trying to catch up on my editing, my blogging has taken a back seat. So, if you want to stay updated on all of my latest work, please check out my facebook page ! Less of Me...

Remember last year when I wrote that long post about slowing down and spending more time with my family??.. (here's the link). Well as many of my close family and friends know, I actually let myself become even more busy than I already was! So, as my crazy year is winding down, God has revealed some things to me that I need to share.

1) Success is not measured by money or the number of "wow, that's amazing" comments I get on facebook.

I've struggled with this for some time. What does it truly mean to be successful? How far do I want to take my business? What do I want to acheive? To the world, I believe success is measured in monetary value and praises...but God is showing me that success is completely different. What if success isn't making a $100 k a year, but rather it's teaching your children how to say "please" and "thankyou"? What if success isn't getting 5000 likes on facebook, but rather making dinner when you've had the roughest day? What if success is reading a story to your kids at night, or dropping off dinner to a family going through hardship? I've been so busy trying to be "successful" from the world's standpoint, that I have failed to realize.....I already have achieved many successes! And everyday is a new opportunity to succeed even more.

2) No is not a bad word.

For the longest time, those two little letters never came out of my mouth (except when talking to my children!). I felt I had an obligation to complete strangers to make them happy, to let people walk over me and take advantage of me. Not with just my business, but in all aspects of life. If someone needed something and I really didn't want to do it, I still said yes, because I was afraid they would be upset with me, or that I would somehow get struck by lightning for saying no. But, God is showing me that I can say no, and I will say no...and it's completely FREEING!!

3) God is the only thing that will truly fulfill me.

I think I struggle with the meaning of success and saying no to people, because I try to fulfill myself with all of the wrong things. I get obsessed with trying to acheive perfection in many things...with my work (not to be confused with house work...definitely not striving for perfection there!!), and I seriously struggle with my body image....buying products that say they will "lift this" and "tone that" when all they do is deflate my pocketbook. When will I see that it's not about me being perfect, but it's about knowing the ONE who is perfect, Jesus Christ.

So with these truths being revealed to me, I will be slowing down my business next year (really, I mean it!!) I have made some changes in the way I do things and how sessions will be booked (you can find most of the changes on my website under the FAQ tab at the top). But, most of all with this post, I just want to encourage you! You are wonderful, you are beautiful (or handsome), you are successful, and most importantly, you are a child of God.

Ari is the sweetest person ever, you just like being around her. She's fun, pretty, and down to earth, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect bride. Phil and Ari's day was wonderful, we had a blast going downtown Fort Wayne, roaming the streets. The reception was gorgeous (the Marriott Hotel), and Ari's talented dad made little two tiered cakes for each guest!! (one of my favorite parts of the night of course!)

I am so excited to tell you that I had the opportunity to shoot the fall cover for Wedding Day Magazine!! Some of the places you can pick up an issue are Macy's, David's Bridal, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, A Party A-Part, and The Bride to Be. (they may not be out in some of the stores until late next week..)

It was one of the hottest days in August when we did the shoot...the model was such a sweet heart to put up with the heat. We shot at the Allen County Fairgrounds during the fair...and trust me, we got some strange looks from people wondering why there was a girl walking around in a wedding dress!! Now that the magazine is out, I can share it with you!!

Not only did I get to shoot the cover, but they featured one of my February weddings!! Congrats Anna and Michael Royal for making your debut in print!

The other day I arrived to a shoot a bit early, so I decided to rest my eyes awhile. I leaned against the steering wheel of my husband's truck and closed my eyes and sighed. I was tired, I could barely stay awake on the drive into Fort Wayne. I was overwhelmed, I have an edit list a mile long with no end in sight. I was praying, praying that God would help me get through all that life brings my way. Then, I was startled by a tap on my window. Caught off guard, I couldn't figure out how to open my window, so I just opened the door....to find a woman standing outside my truck. I thought maybe she needed directions, or heck, maybe she was going to ask me for money (not that I would have been helpful with either!). But what came out of her mouth really took me by surprise. She said, "Girl, you look so depressed. It's not that bad. Someone always has it worse than you. God loves you girl". And with that, she smiled and walked away. I didn't really know what to say, I was seriously sort of in shock. ( And to think, I thought I just looked tired, but now I looked depressed...jeesh!). I thought it was strange for someone to come out of their way to tell me that...but was it really? I'm pretty sure it was God using someone's voice to speak to me, to tell me that He is with me no matter what. And for the following week that I had, it was a message that I kept close to me. My youngest son Reece was in the hospital two nights with a terrible case of croupe (a virus that makes your throat close up), and during that time, I had a peace with me. I knew he was going to be ok. I knew it could always be worse. One of the nights around midnight, I went to the snack room (thank you God for blueberry poptarts!), and there was a young couple standing outside crying because their little boy was sick. I so desperately wanted to say to them that it was going to be ok, that God loved them, but I just simply couldn't do it, I was too scared. I wasn't brave like the woman who tapped on my truck window. I pray that you are open to see the little "taps on your window" this week....to be able to hear God's message through others...and maybe you'll be the person tapping on someone else's window.

Superwoman Gone Seriously Wrong....

I've had this post in my head for several months now, but I could never quite get my thoughts together (so forgive me if I go all over the place..). Something has been consuming my mind for quite some time....it's the thought of never being "good enough". As a mom, as a wife, as a friend...I'm just not good enough. I think we as women put so much pressure on ourselves to be what the world sees as perfect that it makes us start to go crazy. We want everyone to think we have it all together, that our house is always clean, and that our children behave like angels in public.....We rush around and pick up the house for an hour, only to say to our friend as they walk through the door, "oh, excuse the mess, the house is such a wreck." .....why do we do this?! I think it's time to give ourselves a break.....I've had so many expectations for my life that I've simply failed...and with each failed expectation came new realizations about myself.

My Failed Expectations......1). I'll be the best mom ever....

Before I had children, I pictured myself holding them, loving them, reading them stories every night, and having picnics. No one told me I would become the poop wiper, throw up cleaner, booger picker, referee, tired mom that I am. I thought I would have scheduled "school time" throughout the day, craft time, and make healthy snacks. (insert laughter here). I'm lucky if all three of my boys get their teeth brushed and change their underwear everyday. I sometimes resort to using tasty treats as a bribe for good behavior, I yell way more than I should, and my youngest will probably never talk because I don't read to him as much as I should....

2). I'll be the best wife ever.....

I've never been Betty Crocker, so why did I envision myself making lunch for my husband to take to work?? Has it happened in the last nine years? nope. I have great intentions of having fabulous dinners ready for him when he gets home, but by the time 5pm rolls around, I'm usually calling in for a pizza. I thought we would stare into each other's eyes like some romance movie and take long walks after dinner (the dinner that I purchased....). And although we stare at each other sometimes now, it's usually because one of us farted or said something stupid....not because we are dreaming of our eternity together. I thought I would wear makeup and pretty nightgowns....unfortunately, I am usually adorned with my husband's fleece pants and a t-shirt. The sound of my cracked heels scraping across the sheets is the only thing that wakes him up....

3) I'll be the best friend ever.....

We all have a friend that we can go a year without seeing and when we do finally see them, it's like we just saw them yesterday. I wish all friends were like that. Friends take work. And just like my laundry gets away from me, so does taking the time to call a friend I haven't talked to in awhile. It's easy to just stay in my own little world...besides, I'm sure everyone else is just as busy as me, right?? It's not the same to text or facebook someone as it is to send a card or bring a meal.

So why do we think we have to be more than what we are? Who is putting all this pressure on us? the world, our friends, or is it just us putting pressure on ourselves? Why do we play the comparison game? So, I challenge all of you out there to look yourself in a mirror and say, "I am perfect just the way I am".

Is my life what I "expected"? No, it's not.....it's much more!!! More than I could have ever dreamed. I am blessed beyond a doubt and I wouldn't trade any of it! Superwoman you say? Why yes, maybe I am....just not quite the one I thought I would be.

Alicia had contacted me to take pictures of her, her husband, and their dog, Duke awhile back. As we exchanged emails, she shared with me that her and her husband have had a very difficult year. Alicia so graciously said I could share their story.....

She had a perfect pregnancy. Her thirty-seven week appointment was wonderful...everything was ready and Alicia and Eric were awaiting their precious little girl. Then at her thirty-eight week appointment, they heard the news no parents want to hear... the doctor couldn't find the baby's heartbeat. Rylee Paige was stillborn at thirty-eight weeks due to complications with the umbilical cord. I can't even imagine the pain they went through and are still going through. All I know is that Alicia and Eric are amazing people and their beautiful daughter has touched SO many lives. A woman who had lost her son heard about their story and made them a wooden heart with a small hole in it to symbolize the space in their hearts that only Rylee can fill. I was so blessed and honored to photograph them, they are truly an inspiration.

I ventured to MI to meet these two sweeties for the first time, and I'm soooo excited to photograph their wedding later this year (their reception is at an apple orchard..how cool is that?!) Sara is an experienced rider, so it was only suitable that we incorporate her horse into their engagement session. (I've always dreamed of owning my own horse...they are such beautiful animals!)

Aaron and Kristen are the sweetest couple in the world...and so gorgeous together!! Kristen's spirit put me in a wonderful mood and everyone in the bridal party was amazing. They had a wonderful day (a little rain...but nothing we couldn't handle!). I'm so happy for you guys!!

Blessings Redefined....

Have you ever driven by something a million times and never noticed it? It's like one day it just catches your eye and you think, "How did I not see that before?"... Well, that happened to me today, but it wasn't with an actual "object"...it was with a prayer.
I often pray a simple prayer for God to bless me, so I can bless others. Sounds a little selfish, huh...kinda like, "Dear God, make me happy and I'll make someone else happy too!" But, as I was driving home from the store, I prayed that same prayer, "Dear Lord, bless me so I can bless others"...and I heard God reply, "I am and have been blessing you this whole time." "What?? are you kidding me? I'm not feeling blessed, I'm not being showered with goodness (although, this Carmel mocha from McDonald's is helping me feel a bit better...), I'm not seeing rainbows, and I certainly don't feel like smiling. Then, tell me, how am I being blessed??"
Let me just say, if you ask God a question...you can't be afraid of the answer. He gently pointed out to me that just because I'm not feeling the "joys" of blessings, it doesn't mean that I'm not blessing others. We all go through high and low points in our lives, but have you ever considered that the hard times in your life will somehow help you to bless another? Maybe you've had a miscarriage and you just can't understand why it happened, but then a year later you find yourself holding the hand of a young mother who just lost her baby. Maybe you've lost a loved one to cancer and you find yourself being the shoulder your friend cries on when the doctors tell her she has stage three cancer. Maybe you're the person who was abused growing up and you find yourself sharing your story to others that are where you used to be.....
During hard times, it's not easy to see how you are being blessed, but it doesn't mean that God isn't going to take your pain and your struggles, and be able to help someone else who is hurting, someone else who is going through what you already went through.
So, am I still going to pray for God to bless me, so I can bless others?? The answer is yes, because if just one person is helped as a result of my suffereing... then it's all worth it.

Meet Marty and Shannon! Marty was a groomsman in a few of the weddings I've photographed (one being his twin sister's!), so it was such an honor for me to photograph his engagement session with his beautiful fiance!! It was a cold, rainy day last Saturday, but it didn't stop Amanda and Cork from braving the elements and going outside to celebrate their awesome wedding day! I met Amanda a while back at her sister's wedding (the gorgeous Tara). Amanda is so bubbly, beautiful, and funny. Her and Cork are a perfect match for each other. We took most of the pictures before the wedding..(which was great, because the weather just kept getting worse...), and Amanda was seriously a trooper. She didn't mind she was getting wet, she was so care free...she was just awesome! I am going through something very difficult right now...which has nothing to do with my depression. Maybe some day I will be able to share it with you. But for now, I feel that God is revealing to me that part of my healing comes through writing. So, forgive me for the lack of picture posts of my amazing clients...

It's crazy how God can speak through the silliest things. Some may chalk it up to coincidence, others may say I read into things, but I say it's the Holy Spirit working in me. This morning I was making my bed (a rare phenomenon here at the Morehead residence!), and a long piece of thread was hanging off of the mattress. I started to pull it, thinking it would just break off, but you know how that story goes.....It just kept unravelling and unravelling and made me ticked off! Finally, I wrapped the string around my hand and pulled with all my might. "There! I got it!!" Indeed the string was broken and lying in my hand, but it wasn't until a few seconds that went by that I realized it didn't come without consequence. The string had cut my fingers....deep, I just didn't notice it right away... but then the pain came. I went downstairs and put some trusty neosporin on it and covered it with an all too cute Scooby Doo bandaid (the only kind a mother of three boys could ever find in her cupboard). Then it hit me like a ton of bricks...Sometimes in our lives, we try to fix a problem and it just seems to spiral out of control. The more we try and handle it on our own, the farther we get pulled off of the main path. And once we finally get the strength to take control (by giving our struggles to God!!), it doesn't come without pain. But, there is good news friends, after the pain, the healing can begin!! Scooby Doo bandaids can't take away all of our pain, but there is One who is the healer of all. Today I am putting my trust in the fact that I am a child of God and that no matter what comes my way, I have the toughest bandaid on in the world!!

Underneath the Funny | A Personal Story

I've always been the "funny one", the one that makes a fool of herself to get a laugh. I don't know why I feel the need to make people laugh so much, maybe it's because when there is no laughter I get drug down into somewhat of a scary place...a place that is filled with a certain darkness and self doubt. I'm going to be completely honest with you,.... I struggle with depression. "What?!"..you say. "You have so much! You have the best husband in the world, three adorable kids, a great job, and most of all a God that laid down his life so that you could spend eternity with Him in Heaven!! Yes, yes, I'm aware of all of my blessings and I'm very thankful, so VERY thankful, but yet sometimes I can't rise above the heaviness that pulls me down. I feel like a failure so many times because I DO have so MUCH to live for, so much to make me happy, yet I find myself wanting to curl up in a ball and cry....I think to myself, why can't I shake this? What's wrong with me?..the answer is...nothing. Nothing is wrong with me, I have a chemical imbalance and it's ok. It's ok. God loves me and His mercies are new every morning....EVERY morning. I hope you don't think I'm a "crazy", because I'm not. (or at least I don't think I am, lol...) It's not like I walk around in a constant state of depression, I have more of a seasonal depression. So, if you see me walking with a big, bright light around my neck in the winter, you'll know why! Also, depression can manifest itself in many different ways. Some people start harmful habits (which, I did...but that's for another blog post for another day), and some people are just down right angry.

So, why did I share my hidden secret that only my close family and friends know about?? I don't really know why, but maybe you do....maybe you've found yourself feeling down and lonely. Maybe you've reached the end of your rope and you think you can't make it another day....But, you can rest assured that there is Hope. There is hope in Jesus Christ... (and Prozac!). See...there I go trying to be funny again....

I've never taken a self portrait before....in fact, I didn't even know how to take one until I looked it up in my camera's manual tonight. I thought I'd try and convey what I sometimes feel...

Even though I sometimes feel this way....it's not how I feel the majority of the time, I usually am truly joyful. But when the darkness does start to pull me under....I pray. I pray for God to protect me from my emotions...from the lies that fill my head. If this is you, please seek help, because you're not alone. Talk with a friend, your pastor, me...talk to someone.

I apologize for being so depressing (great choice of words, I know!), I promise next time I'll talk of puppy dogs and rainbows...but for now I'll leave you with a song that speaks to my heart...and hopefully it will speak to yours.

Erin and Ryan are Engaged!| Ohio Engagement Photography

I know I always say that God has blessed me with wonderful brides and grooms...but seriously, I AM SO BLESSED WITH AMAZING CLIENTS!! Meet Erin and Ryan, an adorable couple from Sherwood, OH. I had a blast with them last weekend as we ventured across Defiance and Sherwood. With this first set of pics, you might wonder.."why would they be eating ice cream outside in the cold?" Well, you know how you wait all winter for your favorite little mom and pop ice cream shop to open? (for me, it's Dennings in Payne, OH)...well, their favorite one just opened, so we had to stop and get some ice cream. (Ryan treated me to a delicious malt shake...thanks Ryan!)

So, now my favorite part of Erin and Ryan's story.....

They met in high school and one night Erin wrote with her finger on Ryan's dirty truck window, "I'ma marry you someday." And a few years later, here they are engaged! It just so happens that Ryan's dad drives bus for the local school, so when I saw the bus, I knew we had to do some reminiscing of the good ole' high school days!! Being on the bus brought back a ton of memories for me too, it was so fun...

Ryan proposed to Erin at the Independence Dam in Defiance....in almost this exact spot!

Wow, I can't believe how fast a baby grows!! I took little Ava's pics when she was a few months old...and now she is the big ONE! Here she is last summer looking all cute in her cherry dress...

and here she is now....Wow, so big! Ava loves looking at books and playing with her stuffed animals. She was pretty shy this time, but mom managed to get some big smiles from her....
